Buckwheat Hulls
Buckwheat is a fruit rather than a grain and so does not cause allergic reactions that wheat or other grains may. The hulls actually get polished and smoother after a year or two of use which means that the hulls mover more easily into place to support your head and neck. While this polishing process does cause a minor reduction in pillow volume (less than 10%) a one-time-only refilling of the lost volume through adding additional hulls is recommended. These pillows should last 10 years or more.
The pillows are natural, hypo-allergenic and are not a breeding ground for mites. They are adjustable (you can add or remove hulls to suit you) and stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Given that you will be using your pillow 5-8 hours per night and it is supporting something as important as your neck, we recommend you seek out a quality product. The buckwheat should be organically grown, the kernels naturally removed and no other chemicals should be used in the process. Moreover, every effort should be made to remove remnants of buckwheat flour from the product in a non-harmful way. One such pillow is the Makura Pillow.Buckwheat Hull Products
