Adjustability
Some pillows are designed to be adjustable while others can be adjusted regardless of whether they were designed that way. If you have a pillow that wasn’t designed to be adjusted then use the “eyeball test” mentioned in “size”. If the test reveals that you should have a higher pillow in order to keep your neck and spine in a neutral posture then consider adding a towel underneath.
Pillows offer different types of adjustability. Pillows filled with water or buckwheat hulls are the most flexible. If your sleeping pattern, habits or your neck sensitivity changes you can add or remove whatever is in them. The same is true to a lesser extent with those pillows that come with a removable insert.
Adjustability is also important when buying a new neck support pillow. It can take up to 14 days to get used to them. If during that time you find your pillow to high or low or to soft or firm, at least you can fine tune your pillow and ensure that it works well for you.
